Week Twenty Nine – Missions and Mittens

Category : Featured, Fiber Arts, Journal, Travel

Scott left for Uganda yesterday on his first mission trip, ever.  He will be gone for 10 days and is part of an all male (testosterone rich) group of coaches and active guys.  He was excited, nervous, and really just ready to get going by the time we got to the church yesterday morning.  So far, he has made it to Amsterdam and should be in Uganda very soon (after a brief stop in Rwanda for refueling).  Here is the photo of the rowdy group:

The soccer ball is more than just for effect.  They are going over to Buloba on this trip primarily to conduct a soccer camp with the kids.  They will also be helping with installing rain catches on houses and various other tasks that they are led to do while there.  One never really knows what our mission teams will actually get themselves into until they are there and see the need.  If you would like to read more about their trip as they progress through the week, or would like to see Scott’s awesome photos, please visit his site hereHe is also still accepting donations to pay for his part of the trip, as everyone has to raise their own money in order to go.  If interested, you can make a donation right on his site as well.  Every amount helps!

Back at home, I actually finished a Christmas present this past week!

These gloves are “Strata” from the book “Knitting New Mittens & Gloves.”  They are actually two pair of gloves, one fingered, and one fingerless.  They can be worn together or separately.  The person they are for lives where it snows, so hopefully they will be well loved.  The brown yarn is Knitpicks Gloss Fingering and the pink is Knitpicks Stroll.

These were a quick knit (about three weeks) and it was a very basic pattern.  The book has a few more patterns that I would like to try.  I would recommend the book if you don’t already have it.  I have several more projects nearing completion and with Scott gone all week, I should have a few of them to post about for this upcoming week.  Stay tuned.

Quote of the week: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” ~ Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV)

Mr. K and Blogging

Category : Journal

I have been meaning to mention these for some time and since insomnia is my friend today, I have been given the time to do an extra post, so here goes.

My mother, Georgia, and stepfather lived abroad in France and Germany for a total of 5 years or so.  During that time, my mother kept a journal of their adventures, beginning the day they arrived.  She wanted to document their experiences as Americans living and working abroad.  Since Georgia’s death, Mr. K has taken her journals and begun the process of entering the entries into a blog located here.  He is doing a post every day or so and, when he can, he is finding photographs in their albums that correspond to the entries’ topic.  The posts are short, have been very interesting and, occasionally, very funny.

Mr. K also has several other wonderful blogs that you might be interested in.  As a prolific photographer, Mr. K has taken thousands of images over the years and he is now sharing these photos with any one who would like to see them through his image of the day posts on his blog.  He maintains a faith based blog located here, and of course, if anyone is in need of his web or photographic services you can find more information here.

What a Ham

Category : Journal

Scott took his technician ham license exam about three weeks ago and passed without a hitch. We have been waiting for his call sign to be issued. Now I can finally introduce to you KI4WLR.

Shhhh… Congratulations!!

He installed another antenna on the house and now we are just trying to figure out the first radio to purchase so he can put this new license to good use. The house is beginning to look like a NASA station of some sort. I can’t wait until we put up the tower. That should be a blast.

Antenna

Contacting the mother ship

Category : Journal

This Saturday we installed what is to be the first of several radio antennas on the roof of our house. Scott climbed to the top of the roof and mounted the mast and antenna while I ran around on the ground fetching tools and lending moral support. After it was installed we went into attic to retrieve and feed the wiring from the antenna on the roof down the inside of the wall of his office and then out at the base of the wall by an electrical outlet. Hot doesn’t even begin to describe the temperature in the attic! The hole saw’s that we own have been used for years and are quite crappy so after fighting with the hole drilling for a while Scott decided to bring out the big guns. I retrieved the new sledge hammer and it did the trick. Now the scanner is working great with the new antenna installed. It does look a bit sci-fi though. Can’t wait to see what configuration the next one has.

Check out the view from up here. Don’t fall!! The right tool for the job!! Installed

New From Old

We had the diamonds in my old engagement ring made into a pair of beautiful triangle earrings and a custom made pendant.

How do you like it?
