Virtual Knitting Guild – Let’s Start Something New

Category : Fiber Arts, Journal

How many of you attend a knit or stitch meeting?  Do you attend once a week, month, or other?  I do not attend a knitting meet up outside of my home.  It is not that I haven’t tried.  I just love knitting at home more than visiting and chatting (and a little knitting) at someone elses home.  Having said that, I have been thinking about ways to “visit” with other knitters, face to face, without having to leave the comfort of my own home.

Then it hit me.  I have a google (gmail) account and a webcam.  That is all I need!  See, gmail is free, and they have recently added a video portion to their chat (gtalk) window.  It works great and best of all, is free!!!

So, here is the idea…

I would like to set a date and time that some of us could get “together” on video chat and visit.  All those who participate will be able to see everyone else who is participating.  We will be able to knit (or whatever) while visiting because we won’t have to be typing, like in regular chat.  Everyone will have access to their own knitting stuff, their own coffee, food, etc…

If it works out, then we could “meet” at regular intervals (to be determined later).

I know there are several other ways of doing this same thing.  There are several sites that you can log in to in order to accomplish this same type of thing.  But, I thought I would try it through gtalk first to see how many of you are interested and then we can go from there.

All you need is a computer, a webcam, and a willingness to have some fun and try something new.  If you are interested, let me know via email at: nautical.knitter@gmail.com.  I think I will probably limit the group to about 5 or so at first to see how it goes.  Come on, you know you wanna…

On the Dog’s on Thursday front, here is a photo of the progress that Blazer has made in accepting Elf this week.  Not the greatest view of Blazer, but I took what I could get while they were cooperating.  I can’t believe we have had her a week and a half already!

Hello world, my name is Elf

Yep, that is right, we have made it home with our new baby girl Chihuahua, Elf.  Her full name is Ebenezer Legolas Fillmer (Elf for short).  Mr. K calls her Ebby and I call her Elf at the moment.

You know how it is when you get a new puppy and they cry all night in their kennel, pee all over the floor because they are not house trained yet, and pretty much disrupt your entire life and schedule?  Well, not this time!!

Elf did not cry once on the 4 hour long car ride home from the breeder.  She only whines when she needs to go outside to do her business and she sleeps through the night in her kennel, by herself, without making a peep.  Unbelievable!

Here is another shot of her in her new sweater that I knit for her before I had even met her.  It fits her perfectly!!!

Elf in her new sweater

Our vet said she looked awesome and she weighed in at 1 pound 5 ounces (not wearing her sweater).  We brought her home in a carry bag/purse that she has claimed as her very own.  On our way out the door to go pick her up I grabbed a hand knitted hat that my mother had bought in Austrailia eons ago.  From the moment she was placed inside it she claimed it as her own personal snuggly and that is what she sleeps in when she is not playing with her toys or Blazer’s tail.
