Safe Arrival // Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary

Category : Featured, Journal, MDiv

Our first stop on this trip was Clemson University, near Anderson, SC.  Clemson has a beautiful campus that is pretty much a mirror image of the Auburn Campus.  We took a walk through the shops on the main drag through town and came away with a new toy for Ebby.  Who knows she may be starting a collection of university mascots in miniature.  This one plays the Clemson fight song when you squeeze it just like her Auburn tiger plays War Eagle.  She doesn’t much care for either song, and will patiently wait for the song to end before tearing into the stuffed toy.

This is where I sit in the truck.

This is where I sit in the truck.

The drive from Clemson to Lynchburg is a pretty one and after arriving safely, yesterday afternoon, we took a quick tour of the city of Lynchburg, VA and the campus of Liberty University.  The roads here are amazingly confusing.  Everywhere you turn there is literally another set of railroad tracks or a river to navigate around.  Getting from point A to point B with any ease will require a little practice and a whole lot of patience.  We were so busy running around today that I only snapped a few photos.  However, I did manage to do the important things, like, locate a Michaels, A.C. Moore, JoAnns, Wal-mart, and even a cross stitch shop, squee!  About an hour from Lynchburg is the Yarn Barn, which will be a must do trip for me once we are settled.

The seminary is on the north side of the campus right next to the law school.  The south side of the campus seems to be all undergraduate studies.  There is an ice rink, a very nice basketball arena, a football stadium (Go Flames) and best of all, recreation wise, there is the new LU Snowflex, a year round outdoor ski area up on Liberty Mountain.

We really like the area and found an apartment complex that will work for us as well.  Now we are headed to Kill Devil Hills, NC for some beach R&R.  Tomorrow night a hotel room with a balcony overlooking the ocean awaits.  Look out east coast, here we come…

Travel Time // Checking Out The Prospects

Summer semester is officially over and we have a week off to get ready for fall semester.  Are we going to sit still and veg? Of course not!  We are off to Virginia, to scope out apartments, and then the Outer Banks of North Carolina for a few days.  Our apartment hunting is for our temporary move to Lynchburg, VA for the winter semester that begins January 1, 2010.  We plan to begin on campus classes in that semester.  Expect posts and photos.  Until then, here is an indication of what Ebby is looking forward to soon…enjoy!

Finals

Category : MDiv

I just finished my last final.  The first semester is over and I can’t believe it went by so fast!  You know I was really busy because there were virtually no blog posts.  The second semester begins Monday May 11.  Two classes down, many more to go.  My summer semester has three classes in it, two in the first 8 weeks and one in the last 8 weeks.

The two starting on Monday are Church History II (Protestant Reformation to Present Day) and Church Administration.  It is a little strange to be taking these “core” classes again.  Just like in undergraduate work, you have to take a very wide variety of courses at first and then in your last years gradually specialize in something.  I really don’t think Church Administration is going to be my specialty, but who knows…

This semester’s courses were enlightening and very different.  The Discipleship class was relatively easy and required a lot of opinion writing.  The Church History I was a bear!  I loved the class, but the trick (or poorly written) questions on the test really chapped my @**.  Add to that a research paper on Constantine that I don’t think I narrowed down enough in scope and I am dreading seeing the final grade.  However, I have even learned from this experience.  I learned to be extra vigilant in my note taking and start my research for my paper earlier in the future.

Learning is painful sometimes, but always worth it in the end.

It’s All Greek To Me // Lightning The Load

Category : MDiv

I spoke at length this week with those in the know at the advisers office and they assured me that it would be fine if I dropped my Greek class and took it at a later date.  I was relieved!  The class difficulty was not the issue, it was more of a time concern.  The semester that I have been in is a mini-semester that lasts 8 weeks.  I have been working on 9 credit hours, or 3 classes, Greek, Discipleship Ministries, and Church History I.  Concentrating on two classes instead of three has really lifted a lot of stress from the situation.

I am glad that I stayed in the Greek class long enough to learn the alphabet and how to read, or at least decipher, most of the words that I am confronted with in my other classes at the moment.  I have uploaded a copy of my syllabus here if you are curious about the requirements for New Testament Greek.  Next week I will give more detail about one of other classes and possibly post some of my papers as well.

Getting The Hang Of Things // Week Two Was Not As Scary

Category : Featured, MDiv

Week two is “in the books” and, although it is still way too early to tell how I will do overall, it is looking promising. At the moment I am maintaining a 95% average in all my classes. No tragedies yet and I even survived my first exam. This week I completed one essay, 4 discussion board discussions, four hours of lectures, hours of reading and an exam. It seems that organization and time management are key to this process.

I think next week I will tell you all a little more about each class in detail. Perhaps you guys can give me some feedback along the way.

On the knitting front, I have begun the final push on the body of the Civil War Shawl. There are about 10 more rows to go before I can actually begin the never ending border. Yay!! I am trying to knit a little every day in an effort to stay connected with the world outside my studies.

This coming Thursday we are going camping, hopefully, and I will get some photos posted of Ebby. We just got a HUGE tent and so it should be fun setting it up for the first time. I’ll let you know…

Thanks for reading and leave me a comment if you have a minute…
